Craig was born on April 4th, 1944 in Spokane. He is a fan of motorsports and is also into racing. He has appeared in many motion pictures such as the Poltergeist series. Some of the productions where he has featured prominently include Flesh Gordon, Private Benjamin, Poltergeist, Poltergeist II: The Other Side, The Osterman Weekend, Born on the Fourth of July, Ghosts of Mississippi, Dirty Pictures, The Incredibles, Blades of Glory, and many others.

He has appeared in television shows such as Call to Glory, My name is Earl, The District, and Coach. Coach ran from 1989 to 1997. Nelson played the role of a college football coach Hayden Fox.
