Laverne Cox was born in Mobile, Alabama. Cox has a twin brother M Lamar who also starred in Orange Is the New Black. Cox is also known for her being a contestant on season one of VH1’s reality TV series I Want to Work for Diddy. She is also responsible for producing and co-hosting the VH1 TV series TRANSform ME. Cox made her acting debut in the short Betty Anderson in 2000 and starred in her first feature film The Kings of Brooklyn in 2004. She has starred as Sophia Burset on Orange Is the New Black since 2013. Cox has also starred in the movies Uncle Stephanie, Bronx Paradise, Carla, Musical Chairs, The Exhibitionists, 36 Saints, and Grand Street. In 2014 Cox won a Rising Star Award from the Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association. She was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. She also won a Stephen F. Kolzak Award for being an advocate in the transgender community and was the first openly transgender person to appear on Time magazine’s cover in June 2014. Cox won a Daytime Emmy Award for The T Word in 2015 and won Screen Actors Guild Awards for Orange Is the New Black in 2015 and 2016.
