Didier Drogba (French pronunciation: [didje d???ba]; born 11 March 1978) is an Ivorian striker who plays for Chelsea in the Premier League and is the captain and all-time leading scorer for the Ivory Coast national team. He is most remembered for his stint with Chelsea, where he scored more goals than any other foreign player and is presently the club’s fourth leading scorer. In October 2012, Chelsea fans elected him as the club’s best ever player. His physical strength, skill in the air, and ability to keep control of the ball are among his best qualities.
Drogba made his professional debut for Ligue 2 club Le Mans at the age of 18 after playing in junior teams. He was a late bloomer, signing his first professional contract at the age of 21; nevertheless, it was not until the 2002–03 season that he realised his full potential, scoring 17 goals in 34 Ligue 1 games for Guingamp.
In 2003, he signed a £3.3 million contract with Olympique de Marseille. His goal-scoring prowess continued in Marseille, as he finished third in Ligue 1 with 19 goals and helped the team reach the 2004 UEFA Cup Final. Drogba joined Chelsea for a club-record £24 million deal in the summer of 2004, making him the most expensive Ivorian player in history. He led the team win its first league championship in 50 years in his first season, and a year later he won another Premier League title.
Drogba scored 33 goals in the 2006–07 season, earning the Premier League Golden Boot and scoring the winning goals in the League Cup and FA Cup finals. In 2009, he won the FA Cup for the second time, scoring the equaliser in the final, and in 2009–10, he was a key figure in Chelsea’s first double, earning his second Golden Boot and scored the game’s lone goal in the 2010 FA Cup Final. Drogba scored his 100th Premier League goal in March 2012, becoming the first African player to do it. When he scored in Chelsea’s victory against Liverpool in the 2012 FA Cup final, he became the first player in history to score in four different FA Cup finals.
In the 2012 UEFA Champions League Final, he scored an 88th-minute equaliser and the winning penalty in the decisive shoot-out against Bayern Munich. Drogba has been an international for the Ivory Coast since 2002 and has captained the squad since 2006. He is the country’s all-time leading goalscorer with 62 goals. He guided the Ivory Coast to their first FIFA World Cup participation in 2006, as well as scoring their first goal.
He subsequently went on to lead the Ivory Coast in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where he scored one goal. Drogba is a legendary figure in Africa, having been voted African Footballer of the Year in 2006 and 2009. He was a member of the Ivory Coast teams that reached the Africa Cup of Nations finals in 2006 and 2012, although both times were defeated on penalties. While playing for GFA in October 2013, he became the first African footballer to receive the coveted Golden Foot award.
