Katie George WDRB

Everyone knows by now, Katie George is leaving WDRB’s sports department to join the broadcast team of the Milwaukee Bucks. It made big news here in Louisville, where Katie grew up, became a volleyball All-American and Miss Kentucky. I don’t suppose I realized just *how* big the news was until I saw that the photo gallery accompanying the story on The Courier-Journal website was 141 photos. One hundred and forty-one.

Jason Riley, a writer for the web team at WDRB and, like me, a C-J alum, came into my office to say, “141 pictures! She’s bigger than Ali over there!” I don’t know about that. I do know that they have done something that I neglected to do and that I will therefore correct right now; that is, exploiting Miss George’s exit for web hits and profit.

Now granted, I possess neither the talent nor experience that Scott Utterback and the rest of the newspaper photographers have. Not even close. I have, however, made it my habit to photograph my colleagues in the sports department on those occasions when we are working together. Just ask them. They’ll tell you, perhaps with some profanity thrown in.

So there are some Katie moments preserved in photos. I just don’t have anything close to 141 of them. What follows are what I feel are the most quintessential photos I have from the Katie George era at WDRB — or at least the photos that were semi-focused. Thank you for your interest, and for the web hits.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone to cover an event with Katie and had someone walk up to us and say, “How come she’s carrying the camera?” My immediate mental response is something like, “Because I’m carrying the tripod and it’s way heavier you (expletive deleted).”

The actual response is: “I don’t know. Most of your former athlete/pageant winner types skip this step in sports journalism. They aren’t hauling heavy equipment all over the country. They aren’t throwing their backs out sitting in basketball end zones with cameras on their shoulders.”
