Sorel, though, has the distinction of going two for two in scoring significant roles in locally shot films produced by DeVon Franklin, also including the 2014 drama Heaven Is for Real, which saw Sorel playing a psychologist consulted by Greg Kinnear’s character.

In Breakthrough, Sorel plays Mrs. Abbott, the teacher of John Smith, a teen whose return to life after drowning in a frozen Missouri lake is deemed a miracle.

“When I read the script, I was very moved by it,” Sorel says in a phone interview, adding: “I consider myself a deeply spiritual person, though I don’t subscribe to any particular religion. That’s just not my thing. But I’m a big supporter of people who do and I have no judgment or opinion on any religion. I think it’s all good.”

Sorel’s role is especially significant in that her character, a recent widow, is the one who poses the thorny question of why God apparently chooses to answer some prayers but not others.

“If you lived on the planet long enough, who hasn’t had that question in your head: why?” Sorel says.

“And the honest response is: ‘I don’t know.’ But if you’re a person of faith, if you trust in a larger plan, it just depends what your spiritual beliefs are.”

Her character is not the only person to ask the question. On Twitter, a user named Julia Nicole asked the question of why God seems to answer some prayers and ignore others. Sorel, for her part, took the trouble to respond to Nicole’s critique of the film, which said it was “very irresponsible and cruel to imply and encourage the belief that your child was saved due to praying, when millions of children die, are raped, murdered, tortured, kidnapped, etc. every day and their prayers weren’t answered.”

In a tweet, Sorel responded:

“Julia, I played the role of Mrs Abbott, the boys’ teacher, in this film. It was a small but important role. The character asks these questions and addresses this issue quite painfully and beautifully. Please, before you cast a judgment on our movie… watch it.”

Sorel is completely sympathetic to anyone who raises the question.

“The trailer of this film could certainly be a trigger for those who are grieving and haven’t had the opportunity to fully go through that lengthy, horrible grief process,” Sorel says. “So I really felt for this woman.

“I’m looking at the film through the lens of my character and that’s where the response was coming from,” Sorel says. “I just wish she would see it and maybe get a little glimmer of… healing from it.”
