Experts have proven over time that the best way to live a fulfilled life is to earn a living from what you enjoy doing. Terri Irwin has successfully turned her love for nature into a source of livelihood. Terri Irwin is a conservationist and a naturalist widely known as the widow of the late wildlife conservationist Steve Irwin.
She has carried on running the Australia Zoo in Beerwah, Queensland, for more than a decade after her spouse’s untimely demise. Since then, many have been curious to know if this Australian icon and mother of two has married and found love again.
Terri Irwin Has No Intention of Remarrying and Still feels a Connection to Steve
For fans of Terri Irwin, it is just as important to see her happy again romantically as it is to see the work with her late husband continue. The latter has happened, rising to a higher level, but there are still a few question marks about the former.
One that is certain, however, is, Terri Irwin has no intention of getting married again. In a 2018 interview with People, she acknowledged that while there is always a chance to find love again, she has already found her happily ever after. In another interview ten years after Steve Irwin passed, Terri mentioned she would have never married in the first place. She only chose to after she met the late conversationist.
So, but while marriage is off the table for Terri, dating is very well an option, and there have been a few people linked to her. According to Terri, at least 25 men have been rumoured to be her boyfriend. They include Paul and Hulk Hogan, Richard Wilkins and most significantly, Russell Crowe.
None, however, has been a confirmed boyfriend and she remains publicly single to date with no past relationship since Steve to speak of. In a 2017 interview with Access Hollywood, she said she has not dated since her husband passed because she still feels a connection with Steve.
She Has Close Relationship with Russell Crowe that Might be Romantic
The Gladiator actor has been a close friend of the family for years and has maintained that relationship since Steve passed. He was reportedly the first person to call after Steve died to offer his condolences. Terri and Russell have continued spending a lot of time together, even as rumours grow about the actual status of their relationship.
She and her children, Bindi and Robert also spend time on his 320-hectare rural property in Coffs Harbour. A source close to the family suggested the Irwin family tend to go there together because of the scenery. They also mentioned that Terri had been there a few times alone.
Crowe has equally fueled the fire too. In a 2019 photo, he was at the Australian Zoo facility, posing in front of a Koala Chlamydia Ward named after John Oliver. Many took the gesture as confirmation of their romantic relationship, but there is nothing official yet. For now, the two of them remain just friends.
Her Two Children Have Followed in Their Father’s Footsteps
Terri Irwin went on a tour of Australia in 1991 and visited several rehabilitation facilities. While visiting one of them, she met Steve Irwin, an environmentalist and wildlife expert. Their meeting is one they described as love at first sight and what immediately followed was a whirlwind romance.
It led to an engagement four months later. A wedding followed eight months after on June 4, 1992. Theirs was a love bound not just by physical attraction but a shared passion for the environment and animals. That is why on their honeymoon, which most would have spent celebrating their new marriage in a secluded romantic spot, Terri and Steve Irwin opted to film their first television documentary.
The footage of the documentary became the first episode of one of the couple’s media babies, The Crocodile Hunter. As for their actual babies, they gave birth to two children, Bindi Sue and Robert Clarence. Bindi was born on July 24, 1998, and Robert on December 1, 2003.
Both children have mostly grown up in the spotlight, learning and absorbing the family business and philosophy. That mutuality in belief kept Terri and Steve’s marriage alive for several years until his passing in 2006 from a stingray bite. It also informed the professions of their children.
Bindi Sue is a Zoo Operator and Television Personality
In a way, other than the fact her Terri and Steve Irwin are passionate animal lovers, Bindi was destined for a lifetime of working with animals. She was named after her father’s favourite female crocodile and the family’s late dog, Sui. Bindi Sue became a TV personality before she became a zoo operator.
She began appearing on TV alongside her parents at the age of two, starring in shows like The Crocodile Hunter Diaries and the film, The Wiggles: Wiggly Safari. She was homeschooled for 16 years before attending TAFE Queensland East Coast where she earned a Certificate III in Business.
Bindi Sue Irwin solidified her status as a TV personality when she began presenting the wildlife documentary kids show, Bindi the Jungle Girl. The show ran for two seasons with 31 episodes. After her father passed, she got infinitely more famous when she delivered a touching eulogy in front of 5,000 people and a TV audience of over 300 million viewers.
Since Steve’s death, Bindi Sue has been working with Terri Irwin in running the family’s facility, Australian Zoo. She has also deepened her work on television with works like the TV special, My Daddy the Crocodile Hunter. Sue hosted the wildlife-themed game show, Bindi’s Bootcamp and appeared in a couple of films. She appeared in Nim’s Island, Free Willy: Escape from Pirate’s Cove. Her work on television has earned her two awards, Logie Award for Most Popular New Female Talent and a Daytime Emmy Award.
Bindi is also a singer, who has released four albums, all geared towards promoting wildlife conservatism. She released the first, Bindi Kid Fitness with Steve Irwin and The Crocmen in 2006. Her most recent, Bindi and The Jungle Girls Bindi’s Island Dance Party, was released in 2016.
Bindi Has Made Terri Irwin a Grandmother
While the wait for a new partner continues, there has been an expansion of the Irwin family since Steve passed. Terri Irwin’s daughter, Bindi Sue, has gotten married to Chandler Powell, a Florida-born professional wakeboarder. They met while they were teenagers at Australia Zoo in November 2013.
Terri became a mother-in-law on March 25, 2020, after a private ceremony at the zoo. On August 11, 2020, the world learned Terri Irwin is set to become a grandmother after the young couple revealed they are pregnant. The child, a girl, is expected to arrive in 2021.
Robert Irwin is a Wildlife Photographer and TV Personality
Bindi might be the most famous of the Irwin children, but Robert is not that far behind. As early as one month old, he sparked a national incident when his father carried him in his arm while hand-feeding a chicken carcass to a saltwater crocodile. As a result of the controversy, the Queensland government crafted a law banning children and untrained adults from entering crocodile enclosures.
Unlike Bindi, Robert did not get a lot of time with his father before he passed. He was two years old when he died from his infamous stingray bite. Still, he has continued to work in his and Terri Irwin’s legacy. Robert has equally had a television career, with appearances on TV programs like Steve Irwin’s Wildlife Warriors, which earned him a Logie Award nomination.
He co-hosted Wild But True on Discovery Kids and has received an International Emmy Kids Award nomination. Other TV appearances include Ten Deadliest Snakes and multiple-episode appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. He also co-wrote the book series, Dinosaur Hunter.
Most significantly, however, is his wildlife photography career. Robert Irwin is a photography contributor to Australia Zoo Crikey magazine and has gone on various expeditions around the globe for his art. Aside from capturing the world’s most beautiful creatures, he also uses his photos to raise awareness and money.
Robert has helped raise tens of thousands of dollars for the Irwins’ non-profit organization, Wildlife Warriors, by selling his canvas prints around the world. His sister, Bindi, also donates 10% of her wages to the charity, which has been in existence since 2002.
Terri Irwin Continues to Grow the Australia Zoo
It was an idea that brought to life by Bob Irwin (father-in-law) and her husband, Steve Irwin. But following his death and Bob’s exit, it is now entirely under Terri’s control. Assuming control of the zoo has been a continuation of the work she and her husband did before he passed.
Before meeting the famous naturalist, she worked as a veterinary technician in a veterinary hospital. She also founded a rehabilitation facility, Cougar Country, that reeducated wild animals. So, when her path crossed with Steve, there was a shared passion for animals that followed through their relationship.
After they got married, they continued working with animals, and one of their works formed the basis of The Crocodile Hunter. Terri with her husband filmed over 300 episodes of their television shows on Animal Planet.
Their series includes The Crocodile Hunter, Croc Files, Bindi: The Jungle Girl, Croc Diaries, New Breed Vets and Ghost of War. These shows have strong followership and are viewed by an audience of more than 500 million in 142 countries.
The Crocodile Hunter, the foundation on which their TV careers were built, spanned five seasons and 78 episodes and made Terri and Steve famous. Not just as TV personalities but also as animal conservationists.
Together, they grew the Australia Zoo, a 1000-acre zoo in Queensland founded by Bob and originally named Beerwah Reptile and Fauna Park. With the increased income and popularity from The Crocodile Hunter, they made improvements to the zoo by adding the Animal Planet Crocoseum, Rainforest Aviary and Tiger Temple.
Since Steve passed, Terri has further grown the zoo by making a deal with the Queensland government for a parcel land in the Beerwah State Forest. The extra space allowed the development of an open-range safari attraction and an animal hospital. The hospital contains two operating theatres, two treatment rooms and ICU units for birds, reptiles, and mammals. In early 2020, the hospital treated its 90,000th injured animal.
Her Father-In-Law’s Exit Threatened the Stability of the Zoo
While Australia Zoo appears to be thriving since Steve Irwin passed, the journey has not always been a smooth or happy one. About two years after he died, his father, Bob Irwin, founder of the Zoo, resigned from its operations. Bob and Terri reportedly fell out over the growing commercialization of the Zoo.
In his statement on March 2, 2008, he said he was leaving to keep his son’s dream alive in a different property. Aside from his exit, Australia Zoo also faced a slew of financial troubles over the years. In 2008, amidst his departure, the zoo was sued for $2.5 million by a debt collection agency. It was later resolved via an out-of-court settlement.
In 2011, the Zoo fired 30 staff members, claiming low visitor numbers due to the 2008 financial crisis and the 2010/11 Queensland floods. By February 2011, there were reports that the zoo was headed for ruin. However, despite the looming economic threat and fallout with the zoo’s founder, Terri Irwin has kept Australia Zoo alive as of 2020.
Now with full ownership, the zoo is managed by Wes Mannion, Steve’s best friend. It has struck deals with side businesses like Silverback Properties and Muscillo Holdings Pty Ltd. The former owns the land on which the zoo is located while the latter own food courts and merchandising operations.
Her Work Has Received Several Award Recognition
Over the years and since Steve’s passing, Terri’s work in expanding the zoo and animal conservation has received accolades and recognition. In 2007, Terri won the Queensland Telstra Business Women’s Award. The University of Queensland also awarded her an honorary doctorate for her work in conservation and support of high-quality research.
In 2006, she was made an honorary Member of the Order of Australia for her services and contribution to wildlife conservation and tourism. In 2014, she was a finalist for Queensland Australian of the year.
