Facts about San Marino

San Marino is a mountainous country enclosed in by Italy. Despite being one of the smallest countries in the world (with fewer than 30,000 inhabitants), San Marino still boasts of several tourist attractions. Of particular note is the many historical architectures that have survived thousands of years and still stand magnificent around the country. Also located within the country is a museum that boasts ancient history and weapons. One landmark that tourists would be sure to love is the Cava dei Balestrieri, a hub of entertainment featuring an open-air theatre and a crossbow range.

As the oldest republic in the world and also home to one of the UNESCO world heritage, the “San Marino: Historic Centre and Mount Titano”, San Marino attracts hordes of tourists all-year-round, thus making tourism a major contributor to its GDP.

Although San Marino is not a member of the European Union, a Schengen Visa is still required to enter the country as it is only accessible through Italy on all sides. Foreigners staying more than ten days in San Marino require a permit from the country’s government.

With no airports and rail stations, foreign citizens planning to visit San Marino by plane or rail would have to alight from the nearest major airport or rail station, both at Rimini and continue by car or bus.
