Evelyn Mase

Evelyn Mase (18 May 1922 – 30 April 2004) was a South African nurse, who was the first wife of the anti-apartheid activist and future politician Nelson Mandela, to whom she was married from 1944 to 1958. She was the mother of four of his children, including Makgatho Mandela and Makaziwe Mandela.
She met Mandela through her cousin Walter Sisulu and his wife Albertina, subsequently marrying him at the Native Commissioner’s Court. Living together as a family in Soweto, they raised four children. However, their relationship came under strain as Mandela became increasingly involved in the African National Congress. Eschewing politics, she became one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Accusing him of adultery, they divorced in 1958, and he went on to marry Winnie Mandela that year. Taking the children, she moved to Cofimvaba and opened a grocery store, but appeared in the South African press when Mandela was released. In 1998 she married a Sowetan businessman Simon Rakeepile. Her funeral attracted international attention, being attended by Mandela, Winnie, and Mandela’s third wife, Graca Machel.

John Colahan

John Colahan (born 1836) was Surgeon Major General in the British Army.
His father was the son of Professor Nicholas Colahan (1806–1890) and Sarah Whistler (1814–49). Their children were John (born 1836), Frances (born 1843), William H. W., and Nicholas, whose eldest son was the songwriter Arthur Colahan.
Colohan graduated M.D. at Queen’s University, Galway in 1857, and served as an army surgeon in India, Gibraltar and Malta.
He married Eliza McDowel Orr (1859–1899), a concert pianist, in 1885. Their children were Merita (1886), Beatrice (1889), Frederick (1892), Jack (1894), the artist Colin Colahan (1897) and Basil (1899) He served as Principal Medical Officer in Ireland. The family from Dublin to Cape Town in 1889, then to Victoria, Australia in 1896.

John Burges

John Burges (Burgess) (1563–1635) was an English clergyman and physician. He held nuanced reformist views on the vexed questions of the time, on clerical dress and church ceremonies. His preaching offended James I of England, early in his reign, and Burges went abroad for medical training. He spent many years building up a practice, and only resumed a relationship of conformity within the Church of England in the 1620s.
