Unorthodox Reviews is a Ghanaian online music publication. Launched on 18th April 2016 by Godwin Mitchual and Philip Edusei, ”Unorthodox Reviews” publishes on a variety of music genres, often covering Afrobeats, Hiplife, Highlife, Hip-hop and Grime.



Unorthodox Reviews began as a small MP3 blog in 2014 called In 2016, Godwin Mitchual teamed up with Philip Edusei and they coined the term Unorthodox Reviews. Their debut article was on the mellifluous Ghanaian Female singer Cina Soul titled A Bee In the Swarm. Unorthodox Reviews has steadily grown since then, with writers from all across Ghana and Africa.

The blog is known for its efforts to expose upcoming artistes, as seen in their weekly interview segment dubbed 10 Questions. Since it’s inception they have interviewed and written feature articles on the likes of Davina Oriakhi, Blaqbonez, Efya, Amaarae, Nxwrth, RJZ, Seyi Ogunnaike, Darkovibes, $pacely, Sarkodie and Kwesi Arthur.

Unorthodox Reviews hosted its debut event dubbed UR Live on 1st September 2018. UR Live is an annual Hip-hop themed music concert in Accra, Ghana. Artistes who were in attendance include Kirani Ayat, Kiddblack, ToyBoi, Bryan The Mensah, Tinuke, Jean Feier, Sizz the Truth, Ankwa and Klu.

The Unorthodox Reviews staff includes writers from around the world. It also includes guest contributors like Music critics and Music Journalists]]. Crunchbase lists its staff at 1-10 employees in total.

Known as ”Africa’s Best Music Reviews” website, the main goal of Unorthodox Reviews is to bridge the musical gap between the mainstream and the alternative.



In 2019, Feedspot included Unorthodox Reviews on its list of Top 100 African Music Blogs and Websites for African Music Lovers in 2019. Similar to other online music publications, many Unorthodox Reviews articles are focused on musical premieres of indie and major label artistes. In 2019 for instance, Unorthodox Reviews with the help of a PR Firm they established called ””UR-PR”’ premiered Rapper Tinuke’s single “God is A She” which was later featured on and Culture Custodian. In addition to its music journalism content, Unorthodox Reviews publishes articles on events
